Takapūneke holds great historical significance in Aotearoa New Zealand as the site of the 1830 Takapūneke massacre, a pivotal event in the history of Ngāi Tahu and early Māori–European relations. The attack, carried out by the northern chief Te Rauparaha with the assistance of the British brig Elizabeth, resulted in the capture of the Ngāi Tahu rangatira Tama-i-hara-nui and the deaths and enslavement of many Ngāi Tahu people. News of European involvement in the attack caused outrage among missionaries and British officials, highlighting the need for stronger regulation of British subjects in New Zealand. This event became one of the factors that increased pressure for formal British governance, eventually contributing to the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 1840. Today, Takapūneke is recognised as a wāhi tapu and a nationally important heritage site.
